INTRODUCTION Remote sensing data products and GIS improve the efficiency and accuracy of data. For optimum utilization of available natural resources on a sustainable basis, timely and reliable information regarding their nature, extent and spatial distribution along with their potential and limitations is very important. Spatial tools such as the Global Positioning System (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing (RS) for storing and analyzing spatial data can help us make better decisions in management of natural resources Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Participation. OBJECTIVES By the end of the course, the participant should be able to: · Understand the basic concepts of GIS and Remote Sensing · Collect, interpret and manage spatial information using remote sensing and geographic information systems · To support planning and decision-making processes in natural resources management. · To assess the state of resource base and changes that occur and progresses to the assessment of impacts and societal response. DURATION 5 days WHO SHOULD APPLY? Biologists, botanists, ecologists, Foresters, NGO staff, Government officials in environment and conservation, environmental regulators, hydrologists, planners, miners, petroleum engineers, foresters, and farmers. COURSE OUTLINE · Introduction to GIS and Remote Sensing and its relation to natural resource management · Collection of GIS data for natural resource management · Digital Image Processing Techniques in Resource Management · Analysis of data collected · Application of GIS in watershed management, to combat desertification, determination of soil types and moisture content, land use analysis using GIS and slope information identification and analysis. · Application of GIS and RS in biodiversity and management such as ecotourism and community-based nature conservation.
