Introduction
Development and infrastructure projects frequently involve multiple stakeholders with diverse interests, including governments, contractors, financiers, project-affected communities, civil society organizations, private sector partners, and regulatory agencies. Differences in expectations, competing interests, land acquisition issues, environmental and social impacts, labor disputes, contractual disagreements, compensation claims, and community concerns can result in conflicts that threaten project implementation, increase costs, delay completion, and undermine stakeholder trust.
Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) has become an essential approach for resolving disputes efficiently while preserving relationships and promoting collaboration. Unlike litigation, ADR emphasizes dialogue, negotiation, mediation, conciliation, and consensus-building to achieve fair, timely, and mutually acceptable solutions. When integrated into project governance and grievance redress systems, ADR enables organizations to address disputes proactively, minimize conflict escalation, and strengthen community confidence.
International frameworks such as the World Bank Environmental and Social Framework (ESF), IFC Performance Standards, African Development Bank Integrated Safeguards System (ISS), UNCITRAL Model Law on International Commercial Mediation, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (UNGPs), and the International Finance Corporation’s Good Practice Handbook on Stakeholder Engagement recognize the importance of dialogue, mediation, and accessible dispute resolution mechanisms in promoting sustainable development and responsible project implementation.
This Training Course on Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) and Mediation for Development Projects is designed to equip participants with practical knowledge and skills to prevent, manage, and resolve disputes using internationally recognized ADR techniques. Participants will learn how to negotiate effectively, facilitate mediation processes, manage multi-stakeholder conflicts, support grievance resolution, and establish institutional ADR systems that contribute to project sustainability and social harmony.
The course combines international best practices, practical simulations, role-playing exercises, negotiation workshops, and real-life case studies from infrastructure, energy, mining, agriculture, humanitarian, and community development projects.
Participants who successfully complete the course will receive a Certificate of Participation.
