Integrated Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) Programming for Sustainable Community Health

Introduction

Access to clean water, improved sanitation, and good hygiene practices are fundamental to public health and sustainable development. However, millions of people across Africa still face daily challenges related to WASH, including waterborne diseases, inadequate facilities, and poor hygiene awareness.

This intensive training course by Kincaid Development Center aims to build practical skills and knowledge for professionals implementing WASH projects in urban, peri-urban, and rural contexts. With Africa’s growing demand for sustainable WASH solutions, Kincaid is best positioned to equip participants with context-specific strategies and tools that make a difference.

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive Certificate of Participation.

Course Objectives

Module 1: Introduction to WASH and Global Standards

  • Defining WASH: Key concepts and importance
  • WASH and the SDGs (Goal 6 and others)
  • Public health impact of inadequate WASH
  • Key stakeholders in WASH programming
  • Global guidelines: SPHERE, WHO, UNICEF

Module 2: Water Supply Systems and Quality

  • Safe water sources and technologies (boreholes, wells, rainwater harvesting)
  • Water treatment methods: Chlorination, filtration, solar disinfection
  • Water quality testing: Biological and chemical contaminants
  • Water supply system design and maintenance
  • Community-based water resource management

Module 3: Sanitation Infrastructure and Solutions

  • Sanitation technologies: Pit latrines, septic tanks, eco-toilets
  • Urban vs. rural sanitation challenges
  • Faecal sludge management
  • Sanitation in schools, health centers, and emergency camps
  • Inclusive sanitation for gender, disability, and age

Module 4: Hygiene Promotion and Behavior Change

  • Behavior Change Communication (BCC) and CLTS (Community-Led Total Sanitation)
  • Handwashing promotion techniques
  • Menstrual hygiene management
  • Hygiene kits: Composition and distribution planning
  • Cultural, gender, and community considerations in hygiene promotion

Module 5: WASH Project Design, Monitoring, and Integration

  • Designing integrated WASH programs
  • Tools for needs assessment and stakeholder analysis
  • Monitoring and Evaluation: Indicators, data collection tools, and reporting
  • Integrating WASH into education, health, and nutrition programs
  • Group work: Design a community WASH project (presentation and feedback)

GENERAL NOTES

  • The instructor led trainings are delivered using a blended learning approach and comprises of presentations, guided sessions of practical exercise, web-based tutorials and group work. Our facilitators are seasoned industry experts with years of experience, working as professional and trainers in these fields.
  • The participants should be reasonably proficient in English as all facilitation and course materials will be offered in English.
  • Upon successful completion of this training, participants will be issued with a certificate.
  • The training will be held at Kincaid Training Centre. The course fee covers the course tuition, training materials, two break refreshments and lunch.
  • All participants will additionally cater for their, travel expenses, visa application, insurance, and other personal expenses.
