Training Course on Carbon Finance and Carbon Credits in Forestry and Agriculture

Introduction

Forestry and agriculture are at the heart of the global fight against climate change. These sectors are both vulnerable to climate impacts and key contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, but they also provide some of the most effective solutions for mitigation. Carbon finance—the mechanism of monetizing emission reductions through carbon credits—has emerged as a powerful tool to channel investments into sustainable forestry and agricultural practices.

Through carbon credits, landowners, farmers, and organizations can generate revenue from activities that reduce emissions or sequester carbon, such as reforestation, agroforestry, soil carbon enhancement, and conservation agriculture. At the same time, businesses and governments are increasingly turning to carbon markets to meet their compliance and voluntary commitments under the Paris Agreement and net-zero targets.

This training program by Kincaid Development Center equips participants with the knowledge and practical skills to design, implement, and manage carbon projects in forestry and agriculture. It provides a comprehensive understanding of carbon finance mechanisms, project development cycles, market dynamics, and verification processes. Participants will explore real-world case studies, financing opportunities, and policy frameworks that make carbon credits a critical instrument for sustainable development.

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive Certificate of Participation.

Course Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the fundamentals of carbon finance and its role in climate change mitigation.
  2. Differentiate between compliance and voluntary carbon markets.
  3. Identify carbon credit opportunities in forestry, agroforestry, and agriculture.
  4. Navigate carbon project cycles: design, registration, monitoring, and verification.
  5. Apply international standards such as Verified Carbon Standard (VCS), Gold Standard, and CDM.
  6. Explore financing options and revenue models for carbon projects.
  7. Assess methodologies for measuring carbon sequestration in forestry and soils.
  8. Integrate carbon finance with sustainable land use and rural livelihoods.
  9. Evaluate risks, challenges, and integrity issues in carbon markets.
  10. Build strategies to align carbon projects with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and national climate commitments.
