Training Course on Climate Change Resilient Forestry and Forest Ecosystems

Introduction

Climate change poses significant threats to global forests and the ecosystem services they provide. Rising temperatures, shifting rainfall patterns, prolonged droughts, pests, diseases, and extreme weather events are altering forest structures and biodiversity, undermining their ability to regulate climate, provide livelihoods, and sustain biodiversity. To secure forests for future generations, forestry professionals, policymakers, and communities must adopt climate-resilient practices that balance ecological integrity, human well-being, and economic sustainability.

This training course equips participants with the knowledge and practical tools to design, implement, and monitor climate-smart forestry strategies that enhance resilience, promote ecosystem restoration, and mitigate climate risks. Through interactive discussions, case studies, field-based exercises, and policy analysis, participants will learn how to integrate climate resilience into forest management, policy frameworks, and community-based initiatives.

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive Certificate of Participation.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the impacts of climate change on forests and ecosystems globally and locally.
  2. Analyze vulnerabilities and risks affecting different forest ecosystems.
  3. Apply principles of climate-smart and adaptive forest management.
  4. Explore the role of forests in climate change mitigation and carbon sequestration.
  5. Evaluate tools and technologies (GIS, remote sensing, modeling) for climate-resilient forestry.
  6. Develop community-centered strategies for building resilience and sustainable livelihoods.
  7. Examine global and national policies on forestry and climate change (REDD+, Paris Agreement, SDGs).
  8. Integrate gender equality, social inclusion, and indigenous knowledge in climate-resilient forestry.
  9. Assess financing mechanisms for climate change adaptation and forest ecosystem sustainability.
  10. Design practical, context-specific action plans for climate change resilient forestry.
