Training Course on Disposal of Hazardous Clinical Waste

Healthcare facilities generate a wide range of clinical waste, much of which is hazardous and poses significant risks to human health, the environment, and public safety if not managed properly. Hazardous clinical waste includes infectious materials, sharps, pharmaceuticals, pathological waste, and chemical by-products. Improper disposal can lead to the spread of infectious diseases, environmental contamination, and regulatory non-compliance, resulting in legal and financial consequences for institutions.

This training course equips healthcare professionals, waste management officers, and facility managers with practical skills and knowledge to manage hazardous clinical waste safely and sustainably. It explores global best practices, national regulations, WHO and UNEP guidelines, and innovative technologies for waste treatment and disposal. By combining theory with real-world case studies, demonstrations, and simulations, participants will gain the capacity to implement effective, compliant, and environmentally friendly clinical waste management systems.

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive Certificate of Participation.

Course Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the classification, sources, and risks of hazardous clinical waste.
  2. Apply principles of segregation, packaging, labeling, and storage of waste.
  3. Select appropriate treatment and disposal methods for different categories of clinical waste.
  4. Implement occupational health and safety measures for waste handlers.
  5. Ensure compliance with international standards, local laws, and environmental regulations.
  6. Integrate sustainable practices such as waste minimization, recycling, and energy recovery.
  7. Develop and manage clinical waste management plans and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  8. Monitor, audit, and evaluate waste management practices to ensure continuous improvement.
  9. Train staff and build organizational culture around safe waste handling.
  10. Address emerging issues such as pharmaceutical waste, radioactive waste, and pandemic-related waste (e.g., PPE, vaccines).
