Training Course on Forest Conservation, Biodiversity, and Ecosystem Services

Introduction

Forests are the lungs of our planet, providing essential ecosystem services such as climate regulation, carbon sequestration, water purification, soil fertility, and biodiversity conservation. They serve as habitats for countless species, sustain rural livelihoods, and underpin national economies. However, deforestation, illegal logging, habitat degradation, and climate change are placing unprecedented pressure on forest ecosystems, threatening biodiversity and the services they provide to humanity.

This training course on Forest Conservation, Biodiversity, and Ecosystem Services, offered by Kincaid Development Center, provides participants with practical tools, strategies, and knowledge to conserve forests while optimizing the benefits they offer. It bridges the gap between science, policy, and practice, equipping participants to implement sustainable forest management, enhance biodiversity protection, and integrate ecosystem services into decision-making.

Through interactive lectures, case studies, and field-based sessions, participants will explore how forests contribute to global sustainability, climate resilience, and socio-economic development. The course emphasizes practical approaches for balancing conservation and development while aligning with global frameworks such as the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), the Paris Agreement, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive Certificate of Participation.

Course Objectives

By the end of the training, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the role of forests in biodiversity conservation and climate regulation.
  2. Identify key ecosystem services provided by forests and their economic value.
  3. Assess threats to forest ecosystems, including deforestation, degradation, and climate change.
  4. Explore tools and strategies for sustainable forest management and conservation.
  5. Apply biodiversity assessment methodologies and ecosystem service valuation tools.
  6. Develop strategies for community-based forest conservation and livelihood integration.
  7. Analyze the role of forests in national and international climate and biodiversity frameworks.
  8. Leverage ecosystem services for sustainable financing, including payments for ecosystem services (PES).
  9. Evaluate case studies and best practices in forest conservation globally and regionally.
  10. Design conservation strategies that balance ecological sustainability and socio-economic development.
