Introduction
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are important contributors to employment, investment, innovation and economic activity, yet they often face challenges in accessing appropriate and sustainable financing. Limited financial records, informal business structures, variable cash flows, insufficient collateral and concentrated ownership can make SME credit assessment more complex. Financial institutions therefore require robust credit analysis approaches that can distinguish viable businesses from unacceptable credit risks while supporting responsible access to finance.
SME guarantees can play an important role in addressing collateral constraints and improving access to credit. However, a guarantee should not replace sound credit analysis. Lenders need to understand the structure, coverage, eligibility requirements, enforceability and limitations of guarantee arrangements while independently assessing the underlying borrower, business model, repayment capacity and transaction risks.
This course provides an integrated approach to SME credit analysis and guarantee-based lending. Participants will examine SME business and financial analysis, cash-flow assessment, repayment capacity, credit risk identification, loan structuring, collateral and guarantee evaluation, documentation, monitoring and recovery. The programme also considers the roles of lenders, borrowers, guarantors and guarantee providers in managing credit risk.
Through practical case studies and simulated SME credit assessments, participants will develop skills for analysing financial and non-financial information, evaluating guarantees, identifying risks, structuring appropriate facilities and making well-supported credit recommendations. The course is designed to support effective SME lending while strengthening portfolio quality and risk management.
