Training Course on Sustainable Forest Management and Certification Standards

Introduction

Forests are among the most valuable ecosystems on Earth, providing essential goods and services such as timber, non-timber forest products, biodiversity habitats, carbon storage, and water regulation. Yet, global forest resources face unprecedented threats from deforestation, overexploitation, climate change, and unsustainable land-use practices. This reality calls for urgent action to adopt Sustainable Forest Management (SFM) practices that balance environmental conservation, economic productivity, and social well-being.

Sustainable Forest Management emphasizes responsible harvesting, biodiversity protection, soil and water conservation, and the integration of community livelihoods. Certification standards such as Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC), and other national/regional schemes are critical mechanisms for promoting transparency, accountability, and market access for sustainably sourced forest products. These certifications not only safeguard ecosystems but also enable businesses to meet growing consumer and regulatory demands for ethical and sustainable products.

This training course, offered by Kincaid Development Center, provides participants with in-depth knowledge and practical tools for implementing sustainable forest management practices and navigating certification standards. It combines scientific insights, policy frameworks, and case studies with practical skills, enabling professionals to design, implement, and evaluate SFM systems that contribute to climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and economic sustainability.

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive Certificate of Participation.

Course Objectives

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  1. Understand the principles, objectives, and global importance of sustainable forest management.
  2. Identify the ecological, social, and economic benefits of SFM.
  3. Explore key international and national forest certification standards (FSC, PEFC, others).
  4. Assess the steps, requirements, and processes of forest certification.
  5. Apply tools for forest inventory, monitoring, and management planning.
  6. Integrate biodiversity conservation into forest management practices.
  7. Understand chain of custody certification and its role in market access.
  8. Explore the role of indigenous knowledge and community participation in SFM.
  9. Analyze the role of SFM in climate change mitigation and adaptation.
  10. Evaluate successful global case studies in SFM and certification.
  11. Develop strategies to implement and scale SFM practices in local and regional contexts.
